One of my most difficult shows to date was the world premiere of Disasterpiece Theatre Presents: DEATH AT DOWNTON! An Aristocratic Upstairs-Downstairs Murder-Mystery Parody, Because Longer Titles Are A Certain Indicator of High Quality and Refined Taste. The play is a parody of the hit tv show Downton Abbey. Each actor in the show plays both an “upstairs” (high society family member or friend of the family) and a “downstairs” (servant or worker of the house) character. There were many challenges with this piece including figuring out the best way to parody the look while still remaining in the world of the show, finding the best ways to have each actor change quickly between their two characters, and honoring the intentions of the playwright. We also built a few pieces for this show. We built the pants and top for Sibilant. We also made the two hats for the Dowager Countess - complete with tiny birds wearing miniature versions of the hats. The hats were one of my favorite collaborations this summer, between myself and director/creator Rachel Curtiss.
We were featured in the Nemaha County Herald for our opening night/world premiere event which included a cocktail reception at the River Inn Resort, opportunity to meet the playwright Randall David Cook, and a chance to meet and mingle with the cast! We also encouraged everyone to dress up and had a great turnout.
