During the spring of 2022, I had the honor of designing my first theatre show at Burbage Theatre Co, The Squirrels. The play utilizes the common rodent as a device to shed light on race and class in America, and how power can easily corrupt. Featuring gray and fox squirrels, including a family of four and an ensemble of three, I utilized color and texture to differentiate the different species as well as a plethora of changes and crafting techniques to show the evolution throughout the play. The play was so successful it played to showed out houses and was extended.
BroadwayWorld raved about the show, calling it “cleverly written, brilliantly acted, and flawlessly executed production takes audiences on quite a wild ride…Everyone wears tails, chitters and purrs, and holds their front paws (sorry, arms) just as a squirrel would. But they wear normal clothes, speak English, and have (to varying degrees) clear insight into their world.”
The Independent commented “Their costumes are street clothes in shades of squirrel with luxuriously full tails attached on their backs, a look that works without distractingly Halloween-like costumes.”
